 The Community Waste MovemenT

What is the Community Waste Movement?

The Community Waste Movement (CWM) is made up of a variety of community-based groups and projects that deal with waste or waste prevention. These are called Community Waste Projects (CWPs). Examples of such projects are reuse hubs, repair cafés, litter-picking groups, scrapstores, wood recycling projects, tool libraries, gifting platforms, and lots more. They have in common that they work collectively, outside state and for-profit forms (but sometimes in partnership!), to handle waste, stuff and/or materials, or to prevent waste. There are thousands of these groups, projects, initiatives, and organisations in the UK, and together they ultimately help reduce waste and stuff going to landfill, incineration, or ending up in natural areas. They often operate in, and have very valuable insights into, local contexts. They organise people in their communities to take action, but also provide spaces and opportunities for disadvantaged groups, build stronger communities, campaign for change, work to influence the public and local government, as well as spread positivity and hope.
